Taking The First Step

The first steps a child takes mark a moment of discovery that changes everything. At this moment, they realize they have an ability to move in a way that is so far removed from their perfected crawl. They just got a little taller, they got a little bolder and the possibilities got a lot larger. We applaud and cheer those first steps, as grown-ups who experienced this moment so long ago. Although we have forgotten how it feels, we wait in excitement to watch them go - and as they take those first few shaky steps, we are ready to steady them if they fall, because that’s what parents do. A child’s first steps are frightening and exciting, but also essential if that child is going to reach their potential.

Here’s the thing - when was the last time you took some first steps?

Just because you are older, doesn’t mean there isn’t anything new to discover. In fact, the opposite is true. God, our Heavenly Father, has so much more than what we often settle for.

He is cheering you on to keep taking first steps, shaky as you may feel, He is ready with His steadfast arms to hold you, as you go beyond what has become so familiar to you.

Recently I made a huge career change, leaving what I had known for 28 years and taking some first steps in a whole new direction. Can I tell you - it was scary and I was sure a little shaky, but I am now finding my feet and discovering that this whole time, I had those steps within me.

The Bible says in Lamentations 2 23, ‘Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.’ So if God’s got new mercy and grace every day, how are we going to step into that in new ways Maybe you need to take some new steps of trust or belief. New steps in your confession or decisions. First steps in your career or relationships. First steps in your willingness or generosity. First steps in forgiveness and healing. We serve an expansive God who has depths and heights that await those who are willing to keep discovering one step at a time.
